3 Healthy Habits To Start In 2019

Did you know that 127.6 million adults visited the dentist in 2017? This is a vast number of individuals, but it pales in comparison to the 328 million people in the United States as of Jan. 12 of this year.

Yet, countless people are still engaging in unhealthy oral habits. Here are three changes you should make in 2019 when you want to improve the look and health of your smile.

1. Brush your teeth before bed

Above all else, you should always brush your teeth before going to bed. As we eat foods and drink beverages throughout the day, our teeth come into contact with numerous germs and plaque. Without brushing your teeth, this plaque accumulates in obscene proportions before bed. If you don't clear away the harmful plaque, you're more likely to suffer poor dental health as a result. You should try to brush at least twice per day, but make sure brushing your teeth before bed is at the top of your list of priorities.

2. Ditch smoking

Even if you take great care of your teeth, smoking and chewing tobacco puts you at an increased risk for developing periodontal diseases and other oral infections. In particularly severe cases, you might even lose teeth as a result. General dentistry can only support a smoker's mouth for so long before cosmetic dentistry has to fill in the gaps (literally).

Smoking is bad for your health in a number of ways, but none so bad as your oral health. If you notice loose teeth, bleeding gums, or a receding gum line, you might have gum disease. Visit an emergency dentist to get the proper treatment.

3. Actually go to the dentist

It's recommended that you visit your dentist at least twice per year in order to limit the amount of tartar growth on your teeth. It's during these visits that your dentist can also stop tooth decay in its tracks. If you have an untreated cavity, your family dentist can cap the tooth or fill the recess to ensure a small problem doesn't balloon into a larger issue.
